Details:
Come travel to Distant Shore to enjoy a day of celebration and feasting for Saint Clement, patron saint of those who work upon the waves, and for Distant Shore's First Rattan Championship - a Pas d'arms. (Detail of the Pas to be updated) But we will not only celebrate with tourney, good food, courtesy of Syr Yesungge and Gebiedster Griet, and good company - we also have fun for the Arts & Sciences Community as well. Another first, we will be pleased to host the "Stump the Laurel" A&S.

What is a "Stump the Laurel", you ask?
From the crafty mind of Lord Varenko comes Stump the Laurel!

This A&S Challenge will challenge more than the entrants, it will also challenge its judges!

The NEW revised rules are: Enter ONE item for which you must have documentation.  This entry can either be a "true" entry, or a "false" entry.

A "true" entry is one where the item falls within the SCA period, and the documentation submitted with it is accurate.

A "false" entry can be one of the following:

  • Something made up in your head, and attributed it to a time and place that falls within the SCA period
  • Something post-period (after 1600), but attributed to a time within the SCA period
  • Something attributed to a different time (at least 200 yrs) & place (culture:  i.e.  western vs Asian) but is otherwise within SCA period

This is open to all levels of artisan, so when reserving your competition spot you must indicate your level of expertise:  Novice, Intermediate, or Expert.  (If you are not sure what level to enter, contact the A&S Coordinator listed below)

Novices will be required to provide a 3x5 card with each item, listing the item name, period, and a few words to indicate its usage, any reference sources used, and anything else noteworthy about the item, and the manner in which it was created.

Intermediates, along with the basics listed above, must produce a half sheet of typed info per item and cite sources if any.

Experts, in addition to the basics listed above, must have a full typed page of research.

No pictorial sources may be used but will be encouraged to be available, if necessary, to reveal the fakes or confirm the true items; however, pictorial sources may be cited in the text documentation. Each items will be judged by the laurels in attendance, and they will be asked to vote True or False. The entrant that stumps the most laurels will win the glory and a prize!

But wait! There's more! The laurels will be competing amongst themselves to see who can be stumped the least! The judging and the reveal of the results will be open to the general populace, so that you too can see if you can spot the reals vs fakes! (Although we will ask if you will please not interfere with the competition during judging, despite any peer pressure you may feel)

So all you artisans out there, roll up your sleeves, put on your craftiest thinking cap and get ready to STUMP THE LAURELS! To reserve your spot, please contact Mistress Bess Darnley at 902-668-2985 or sjpaterson@eastlink.ca. (No laurels will be harmed in the running of this competition).

There will be an open cash bar if you wish to have any beverages of that nature. Anyone in violation of this will be asked to leave the event immediately.
