Mistress Bess' contribution to this project was the throw rug. For this she chose a wall hanging made originally in north Germany in late 14th century. The wall hanging tells the story of the Legend of Tristan. She took the ideas from this wall hanging and told the story instead of the making of the Picnic Basket as a gift from TRM East Kelson and Geneviere to TCM Tristram and Katrine.
(The inspiration can be seen at :http://www.freewebs.com/bessdarnley/pennsicxxxivproject.htm)
The rug is white wool with dyed un-spun wool needle felted into the designs. (She does not believe needle-felting to be a period art form. The best she could find is it is a very modern technique, however she liked the effect it has upon the design and chose it with the knowledge it was, as far as she could find, in-authentic.) Lined with unbleached linen it is quilted around the motifs to keep both layers working together.
