Lady Janet Kempe is a daughter of a minor nobleman in Essex, England at the time of Henry VII. She spends her time playing music, doing needlework, experimenting with cooking, and sewing. Her father's business interests keep him London and in Flanders where she has developed a taste for fine clothes and fabrics, and for the Flemish style of dress.

Being the only child with no older brothers, and in large cities, Janet is also learning the art of rapier to defend herself. Her father is thinking of moving to Flanders to keep a closer eye on his business transactions and his daughter (since there is this Scottish mercenary who keeps hanging about…)
