1. The Minutes for the September 16, 2001 Curia Meeting

Motion for approval of minutes by Colin MacKenzie , seconded by Joe Chiasson. Minutes approved.

2. Officer Reports

(Note, the majority of the reports had been previously circulated by email to the members of curia so as to facilitate discussion. The opportunity was given for discussion and re-reading of each report if needed).

2.a. Arts and Sciences:

  • Diane Plumbridge-Reid submitted a detailed report which had been circulated by email. It included the report from the A&S ministers of YYG, Seashire, and a report on the activities of the Dabbler's Guild.

2.b. Chatelaine:

  • The baronial chatelaine has been communicating with the canton chatelaines via internet chat.
  • His office is planning activities for the Canton Challenge event.

2.c. Minister of the Lists:

  • The MoL had filed a report via email.
  • Several new authorizations reported.
  • His membership had accidentally expired. He has since taken care of this.

2.d.Knight Marshal's report:

  • He's had no reports from Wolfsgate and Seashire. Distant Shore has been having weekly practices with up to 11 fighters.
  • Practices at the Fleet Club in Seashire are also growing. It's had 6 new fighters and 8 new forms.
  • YYG is looking for help for getting fight practices started.
  • There are now two marshals for children's boffer. Mike hopes to get this activity up and running in the new year.
  • Heavy scouts category has been brought back but is not an issue in Ruantallan because of our comparatively small fighter population.

2.e. Icicle (Herald) report:

  • Her report had been circulated by email. It included information on the Investiture court, the Domesday book, baronial phone list, and the Wolfsgate banner. All the cantons have rostered heralds except for YYG which is in process. Names and devices are being submitted, some articles were written and sent to the web minister. The regalia inventory had been put on hold because of work on Investiture. She has contacted the MoL regarding archers, fighters and the like who get baronial baldrics.
  • At the meeting she also noted that the Coronet plans some changes to the order of toasts at events.

2.f. Exchequer:

  • The exchequers report was circulated by email.
  • Our bank balance as of 21 Nov, 2002 is $2,341.26 but there are cheques outstanding.
  • Signing authority for cheques drawing on the Baronial account. We discussed who should have signing authority.
  • Some had concerns about pre-signing cheques and did not wish to pre-sign cheques. These discussions were tabled until the next meeting.
  • Wolfsgate's funds are being held by the barony until that canton can get an exchequer.
  • Exchequer cannot get in touch with Myghall's exchequer.

2.g. Chancellor Minor:

  • The chancellor minor is currently creating a minor and could not attend the meeting.
  • She emailed her report which Keith read out to curia.

  • Compiling resources, ideas and materials.

2.h. Web Minister:

  • No report other than the page is being updated with events and announcements.
  • There were no entries for the web page illumination contest. Minister speculates that this may have been because he did not get the contest announcement out soon enough - about 3 months notice.

2.i. Chronicler

  • No report.

3. Seneschal Reports

3.a. Distant Shore:
Report was circulated by email. It included the following:

  • The canton now has a full slate of the required officers but it's been "musical chairs".
  • There have been fight practices at Castle Darnely.

  • Rumours of canton event but no bids as of yet.
  • Gifts were presented to founding and current coronets at Take one Sheep event by the canton and individuals.
  • MoL noted that there was no report of authorizations from Distant Shore.

3.b. Seashire:
Presented verbally. Highlights include:

  • Seashire meetings on the second Monday of every month
  • There were demos in [Point Pleasant?] park in September
  • The was one event -- Herne the Hunter on Dec 15th. More events are being planned.
  • The canton populous is active. There are weekly fencing and rattan practices in Seashire. The fencing practice is Seashire's while the Rattan practice is baronial, i.e. the Baronial Knight Marshal is responsible for the rattan practice so it is Baronial.
  • Sunday fencing and rattan practices have stopped because of poor attendance.

3.c. Wolfsgate:
Report was circulated by email. Highlights:

  • Full slate of required officers except for exchequer
  • 6 paid members
  • Held two demos and one event. The demos generated some interest.
  • New events are planned.
  • Seneschal asked for $50 of the Wolfsgate funds to be given to Seashire. Motion by Mike Sangster, seconded by Greg Murray. Motion passes

3.d. Ynys Y Gwaed:
Sent a report via email. Noted that pervious seneschal (Chris Vessey) has not filed his share of the report. Acting baronial seneschal agree to contact Chris for a verbal report.

Report highlights included:

  • YYG has a full slate of required officers
  • Weekly meetings and practices are happening
  • Had a small feast where the proceeds went to the Island CBC Turkey Drive.
  • Web site has moved
  • Cantreff members sent personal gifts to founding and current coronet at Take one Sheep event.

4. Legate's Report(s)
There is no activity of the Northern Shores Regional committee. There have been no meetings.

5. Committee Reports

5.a. Group insurance (Maria Crook, Colin MacKenzie, Greg Murray):

  • It will cost us $25 to register as a non-profit society in Nova Scotia each year.
  • PEI would have to do this separately.
  • We cannot get a copy of the SCA insurance policy. The policy only seems to cover the Board of Directors and event autocrats.
  • If we register with Sport Nova Scotia, we can get coverage under their insurance policy.
6. Event Updates

6.a. Baronial Investiture Anniversary event in YYG.

  • This was included in the seneschal?s report.

6.b. Take One Sheep/RP/EKU/Investiture
Highlights of event were circulated by email:

  • Successful event. Their Majesties were very impressed and the investiture went smoothly.
  • There were some problems with the food service.
  • The event made an awful lot of money for the barony and the East Kingdom University.
    $413.27 for each.
  • We were over budgeted. It cost 925.57 rather than 1335.
  • The chief cook kept the kitchen costs very low ($4.50 per person rather than $7.00)
  • We got our $250 damage deposit back
  • We also raised $175 for the Royal Travel fund with a toy sheep auction.

6.c. Costume Ball
Saturday, October 27th

[I cannot find my notes on this event. Was there a report or was it a Wolfsgate event?]

6.d. Flames of fall
Report was circulated by email. It included:

  • Event saw a loss of $23.99.
  • Other than the rain, the event ran smoothly.
  • Archery, equestrian, and rattan activities.
  • Approx. 60 people showed.
  • The autocrat was concerned about minors being left behind when their designated guardian had left after the closing of the event.
  • The great bathroom debate. People were concerned about the distance to the bathroom and the number of bathroom. Colin suggests that for the next event people should camp in the field that's closer to the bathroom. For some reason, people camped in the wrong field.
  • After some discussion there was a general agreement that there were enough bathrooms for the 60 people.
  • It was noted that the field closest to the bathrooms is also very close to the road. If we camp there, we should organise a camp watch.
  • Keith Noseworthy noted that the founding Baroness had to pay the site fee at this event and asked if the baroness should be reimbursed. (Baronial Curia, June 10, 2001, section. D.F states that "Following a brief discussion, a decision was made to waive event fees for all future Baronial events for both the Founding Baron and Baroness, and the Landed Coronet, if different, for the duration of Their terms of office" ). Also, if she is to be reimbursed, should the money come out of the event or the baronial treasury? Discussion tabled until next event.
